About Opossums

Opossums live in many parts of the United States. The size of a house cat, they have long pointed noses, round ears, a rat-like tail and have either gray or white fur covering their body. The female of the species has a pouch similar to the kangaroo to carry her babies. Opossums typically invade the walls and attic of your home and are only active at night. This can make it difficult to determine if one has invaded your home. However, there are signs that can alert you to their presence.

The first sign would be their smell. The opossum has a naturally unpleasant odor, and their urine and feces is extremely pungent. The smell will seep into the insulation, wood and other areas surrounding the spot where they are nesting. Stains may appear in the walls and ceiling from their defecation. You may also notice disappearing pet food. Opossums love wet or dry pet food and can consume quite a bit at one time. Other signs you may have an opossum  infestation is scratching or noises in the walls or overhead. This will be more evident if babies are present as that’s how momma and baby opossums communicate.

If you notice any of these signs, they should not be ignored. Opossums can cause significant damage to your home. Although they like to climb, they aren’t exactly graceful and can tear up your exterior siding. They will also shed and ruin insulation, leaving behind a mess. In addition to their smell permeating your home, it is not uncommon for opossums to die inside your home. The corpse of an opossum smells even worse.

While they tend to avoid confrontation, opossums will bite if threatened and can potentially transmit any diseases they carry. At the first sign that you may have one or more opossums living in your home, the professionals to prevent personal injury and minimize any damage they may cause.
