About Squirrels

While there are two hundred species of squirrels found throughout the world, the gray squirrel is commonly found throughout North America. Woodland dwellers by nature, squirrels will enter into homes looking for a warm place to ride out the colder winter months or to find a safe place to nest. They tend to target houses with easy access to food and water sources. It is a common misconception that squirrels only eat nuts. They are actually omnivores, eating both meat and plant-based foods. This means that whatever is in your garbage cans or your pantry could attract them.

Squirrels can cause widespread damage throughout your home. Though you may not actually see them, there are signs that can alert you to their presence. Finding food bags or containers that have been chewed through or finding feces in cabinets or corners of your pantry is one indication. You may also hear scurrying or scratching overhead or in your walls. Creating unsanitary conditions in your pantry and causing you to throw away food isn’t the only damage they can cause. They can chew through electrical wires inside your walls creating a fire hazard or PVC pipes causing them to leak. When nesting in your attic they will shred insulation and even wood framing. Replacing food and repairing damage can become expensive

If you suspect a squirrel has taken up residence in your home, it’s best not to try to remove it yourself. When threatened, squirrels may bite and possibly cause an infection or transmit disease. Contact the professionals as soon as possible to prevent personal injury and minimize any damage they may cause.
